Woodfordia Installation

woodford 3The Queensland Folk Federation (QFF) had been seeking an economic and environmentally friendly solution to its challenging wastewater treatment requirements for over 15 years. The main issue was to find an economic solution to manage its highly variable wastewater production flow pattern. The site is host to the Woodford Folk Festival, The Dreaming Festival, The Planting Festival and in recent years has been hired for the Splendour in the Grass festival. In between events wastewater production is less than 1000 litres per day at the Woodfordia site, but during festival events it can be as high as 2 million litres per day. The wastewater produced at the site has variable quality and is not standard domestic effluent. The multiple treatment challenges presented by the Woodfordia site meant that the QFF was transporting all of its wastewater off-site, which accounted for 11% of the total carbon emissions of the organisation.

Arris Water was the first company able to solve the Queensland Folk Federation’s needs in an economically and environmentally sustainable way. The $1.5 million project was designed and constructed within six months, commencing in June 2009. The plant was commissioned during the actual operation of the 2009/2010 Woodford Folk Festival. The completion of the plant enabled the QFF to slash their cost of managing their wastewater by more than 80%, reduced the site’s carbon emmissions and gave them the capacity to offer the Woodfordia site to third party clients for hire and use. As a result, the QFF has since secured the Splendour in the Grass music festival for the past two years. This three-day festival has a daily attendance of approximately 50,000 people.

The Woodfordia plant is engineered to manage a peak flow of 1.5-2 megalitres of wastewater per day at 30L/sec. The plant comprises a batch processing treatment chain that has as its centre piece Arris Water’s Zetos technology.
