Investigation of potential water sources for the proposed MAR and irrigation scheme in the Myalup area, 2018

As part of the Government’s initiative to grow horticulture in the Myalup area south of Perth, DPIRD has identified a new precinct with Stage 1 consisting of 580ha. The area has been assessed as suitable for a Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) scheme to harness winter runoff from the local drainage system for groundwater storage and recovery during the irrigation season.

Based on our extensive knowledge of water resource assessment and water policy, we were commissioned by DPIRD to deliver a prefeasibility study on the potential volumes of the drainage water and water supply options.

A feasible local water supply for development of over 580ha of new horticulture and expansion of existing horticulture in Myalup

Highlights included:

  • Analysed local flows and identified a reliable water source of 13GL/an and potential to develop up to 23GL/an;
  • Analysed flows to test climate change scenarios and nutrient reduction plans for significant waterways;
  • Developed a strategic environmental water policy; and
  • Formed a water policy framework and regulatory pathway.

Arris carried out analysis and assessment of:

  • streamflow and rainfall including climate change scenarios;
  • environmental considerations and limitations;
  • water reuse and engineering and economic options;
  • water policy and regulation for a water supply; and
  • water quality and nutrient management.

Using local drainage stormwater is a viable water supply response to climate change

Our assessment delivered confidence to DPIRD in the viability of a water supply for the proposed horticultural expansion at Myalup as well as new water for existing horticulture.

Outcomes

  • Identified a high reliable water supply for horticultural expansion in the Myalup area;
  • Mapped a strategic policy and development pathway for the local water supply; and
  • Economic and financially viable intensive horticulture opportunity.
